'Those Who Left The Dales'
In October 2010 the Upper Dales Family History group celebrated its 10th anniversary. The celebrations included the publication of a book containing over one hundred stories of migration from Swaledale and Wensleydale.
This book summarizes the stories of over 100 families who left the dales between 1700 and the end of the nineteenth century. For anyone with family names from these dales the stories are moving or funny or astonishing and all are remarkable.

'Muker: The Story of a Yorkshire Parish' by Edmund Cooper and illustrated by Jocelyn Campbell
Edmund Cooper's book on the history of Muker was written during World War Two when the lives of the people of Swaledale were about to change dramatically. By the mid-twentieth century, young people had greater educational opportunities, this and the mechanisation of farming, led them to seek employment out of the dale. Electricity arrived, transforming domestic life. Motor cars became common, and the tough little working Dales ponies became a rare sight.
This book reminds us of geological and a pre-historic past. It records the slow tempo of life over many centuries from the arrival of hunting man to the mid-twentieth century, portraying that hard, but simpler, way of life with historical facts, traditions and anecdotes.
